General Microfinance Loans

The Micro Enterprises Support Programme Trust (MESPT) invites expressions of interest from institutions delivering financial services to the micro-enterprises sector in Kenya. MESPT will provide loans to selected institutions whose activities are in line with our objectives and mission.

Our objectives and mission

The overall objective of MESPT is to promote economic growth, employment creation and poverty alleviation through support to enterprises. MESPT works with intermediaries that provide financial or business development services to improve the performance or enterprises. MESPT provides credit to financial institutions that already have a micro-finance or a lending programme. The aim is to strengthen financial intermediaries in order to establish a strong, stable, market-based micro-finance sector in Kenya. MESPT only works with institutions that reach, or have the potential to reach a large number of enterprises on a sustainable basis. Preference is given to institutions with substantial rural outreach.

Those eligible to apply

Any institution or agency lending to micro enterprises is an eligible intermediary. The organizations must be Kenyan entities legally constituted in complete compliance with the laws of Kenya governing such entities. Such an organization may be a commercial bank, a building society, an NGO, a Sacco, a CBO, a church or any organization that makes loans to micro enterprises. However, MESPT will seek to work with financial intermediaries that have been operating efficiently for at least three years and have a minimum of 1000 potential borrowers. The approved financial intermediaries will be required to provide acceptable security.

Types of loans

The MESPT loans will be available in Kenya shillings for a period of 2-3 years and include a grace period of 3 months on the principal amount. Loans are available at competitive rates of interest.

How to apply

Interested financial intermediaries are invited to send an “Expression of Interest” to MESPT with the following information:

  1. Name, physical address and box number of the organization plus telephone, fax numbers, and email contacts
  2. Name and title of the contact person
  3. Year of establishment
  4. Institutional form and name(s) of principal(s) shareholders, directors and key personnel
  5. Type of economic activities that the institution finances
  6. Geographical spread of credit activities
  7. Financial services (other than credit) that the institution provides
  8. Audited accounts for the last 3 years
  9. Number of micro-enterprises with loans from the institution
  10. Saccos must demonstrate that they have (or are willing to initiate) a stand alone credit programme for micro enterprises / enterprise groups on which separate portfolio reports can be provided

All the Expressions of Interest received will be acknowledged within two weeks of receipt. This will be followed by a desk review by the credit team to determine those that should be recommended to submit detailed loan applications.
